Blueberry Picking

It's that time of year again!  Blueberry picking always makes me think of "Blueberries for Sal" one of my all time favorite children's books.

This morning the kids and I joined Noelle and her brood at the Mercer Slough blueberry farm for a picking session followed by a picnic lunch on the shores of Lake Washington.

Sadly, my haul was only a little under two pounds, well short of the amount I need to make blueberry butter.  I am hoping that I will be able to supplement my hand picked beauties with some from the farmer's market.  If indeed I am, look for a post later this week on my crockpot blueberry butter.  If not, there will probably be a picture of my kids stuffing themselves silly eating them out of hand.

While we're on the subject, commercial blueberries are one of the nasty offenders in the dirty dozen.  The dirty dozen is the list of the commercially grown produce with the most pesticide residue.  This is where you should concentrate your organic produce spending dollar. The clean fifteen is the list of the commercially grown produce that's safest to eat.

I recommend you print and clip this handy cheat sheet .  I keep it in my wallet because I can never remember what's on each list!

  1. Blueberries, yum! Even better if you've picked them yourself, I suspect.
